Residential Main Distribution Frame / MDF / MDF Box

An example of a corporate telecommunications Main Distribution Frame (MDF) in Melbourne

Phoneworks specialise in all Main Distribution Frame / MDF / MDF Box connections.

The Main Distribution Frame, or MDF as it is commonly known, is where the legal responsibility of the Telstra and the other Telco’s finish.

From the Main Distribution Frame / MDF into the premises, all telecommunications wiring is privately owned and maintained.

Many people refer to the Main Distribution Frame as a MDF box or MDF for short.

The Main Distribution Frame / MDF or MDF Box is the lifeline of many residential and business tenants and must not be accessed by amateurs!

Phoneworks only use experienced, fully licensed, Phone Technicians who specialise in telecommunications to connect your phone line.

Failure to do so can result in disconnection of the wrong line and inconveniencing other people or businesses.

There can only be one Main Distribution Frame or MDF in any high rise apartment building or flats.

Other telecommunication frames are referred to as Floor Distributors (FD’s) or local distributors.

In Telco talk the Main Distribution Frame / MDF is also referred to as the Network Boundary Point.

Locating the Main Distribution Frame / MDF / MDF Box

The location for the Main Distribution Frame / MDF can vary in large buildings, but the correct location is either on the ground floor or basement/car park.

Older style buildings and flats may have a Main Distribution Frame / MDF located on an external wall.

Quite often the Main Distribution Frame / MDF in larger buildings is securely locked in a communications room and require access from a building manager.

Main Distribution Frames for large buildings are usually locked in a communications room and require access from a building manager.

Main Distribution Frame / MDF Connections

During the installation process, your provider will arrange to have a Telstra contractor identify and connect the data or phone line with a card on the Main Distribution Frame. (MDF) This is known as a "tagged" line.

This then allows a licensed Phone Technician to identify the line and connect it through to where ever it needs to go.

A tagged data or phone line on the Main Distribution Frame / MDF will contain appropriate information for your private Licensed Phone Technician, including;

  1. The name on the order.
  2. The phone number of the line being connected (if appropriate).
  3. The order number associated with the service.
  4. The date when the line was connected and tagged.
  5. Cable details (more information for your Phone Technician).

Phoneworks technicians are experts at MDF connections.
